TWO OCEANS MARATHON and YUNNAN BAIYAO

The Two Oceans Marathon has earned a reputation as the world’s most beautiful marathon. The first race was held in 1970 and saw 26 runners line up to face the unknown challenge. Since then, the race has become a national institution and a firm favourite with local, upcountry, and international athletes. The event attracts close to 26 000 participants across the ultra, half marathon and the fun runs and provides them with a mixture of breathtaking scenery, a gruelling test of fitness for both the elite and recreational runner, and an unrivalled race organisation and atmosphere.

Participants consistently vote it as one of the best in South Africa and it continues to attract strong fields and an increasing number of international entrants. The event has become synonymous with the Easter Weekend in Cape Town, with the pre-race activities at the expo, family day, and fun runs on Easter Friday. En-route entertainment on the race day provides fun, excitement, and a unique experience to runners, family, friends, and spectators alike.

Participants can choose from various distances – the scenic 56km ultra-marathon or popular 21km half-marathon and the 5km or 2.5km fun runs.
2008 saw our new technical sponsor PUMA come on board and sign a contract for the next 5 years. NOAH (Nurturing Orphans of AIDS for Humanity) was appointed as the official race charity and we were pleased to hand over a donation of R211 000 to them through the kind generosity of the runners.
This year a total of approx 21 000 runners participated in the half and ultra marathon.

The marketing and distribution of Yunnan Baiyao has recently been taken over by Spine Align – a company owned by Steve and Sue Moubray – based in Cape Town. Both Steve and Sue are keen sports lovers and participants and are aggressively marketing and targeting the sports category for Yunnan Baiyao. The Two Oceans marathon was an ideal opportunity for such a promotion. A number of product samples were distributed to the runners in their Goody Bags. A Goody Bag is a bag that each runner receives when they register for the race - a great tool for specific target marketing.

In order to reinforce the benefits of Yunnan Baiyao for the runners - Steve arranged to have two Yunnan Baiyao “stations” along the route where the runners could actually experience the true benefits of the product. Sue operated one of the stations at the 42 km mark along the race which proved to be extremely successful and a lot of fun.

Steve arranged and managed another site at the 51 km mark along the route.

One of the main charity beneficiaries of the race is NOAH (Nurturing Orphans of AIDS for Humanity) – this is a home for orphans of aids victims – Spine Align offered to host a number of the kids at this site. Tee Shirts and food were provided and fun was had by all.( See pictures of the day below)
The promotion was extremely well received by the runners and the objective of exposing Yunnan Baiyao to a large category of new consumers was definitely achieved.

A number very complimentary comments were received from the runners after the event – the following is an example of one:

I ran the 2009 21km Two Oceans Half Marathon. I had bad knee pains before the race and received Yunnan Baiyao in my goody bag the day before the race. I sprayed my knees the night before the race and for the first time in months had no pain during the night. The next morning I sprayed before starting the race and magically - no pain! At about 16km samples were handed out at a waterpoint and took a red canister and sprayed both knees. I continued to the finishline without pain. Thank you for introducing me to your product.

There are a number of exciting plans and projects planned for Yunnan Baiyao over the next couple of months and with South Africa hosting the Soccer World cup next year it will be an exciting and interesting time for Yunnan Baiyao in South Africa.
